Checking out Regensburg, so much to see.

We started our day listening to a talk all about how the Main-Danube Canal was built. A man came on our ship and showed us pictures of the different ideas for joining the waterway of the Main river to the Danube River that started with Emperror Charlemagne, and again by King Ludwig I, and finally got finished being built in 1992. He had all sorts of diagrams and statistics about the construction too.

So interesting to hear about the waterway we travelled through.

Now we’re through the canal and in Regenburg. Let’s go out and explore this UNESCO heritage town.

We started at the Thurns and Taxis Palace. The lovely Helena took us on a tour all through the Palace, showing us the rooms and telling us all about the German noble Princess, who still lives there, and some history about her ancestors from years ago.

We learned that the palace started out as a monastery, but became the home for the very wealthy Thurns and Taxis family in the 1700s, and was expanded and became their palace. The family wealth and position was created after Franz von Taxis helped create a postal system in the 16th century, giving the family prestige and great wealth, and helping the them become important and move up in society to a position of royalty.

Next we walked through the town and stopped at the cathedral, that is a huge landmark you can see from all over the town because it has two really tall spires. We got to go and have a look inside but had to be really quiet.

Then we walked through the town looking at all sorts of buildings and listening to the man that was showing us the way (so we didn’t get lost) as he told us about the history going all the way back to Roman times.

Finally we ended up back at the river and got to see the old stone bridge, with all the arches, that was built in the 12th century to help people get across the river to market safely.
