We reached the historic town of Passau this morning. We heard that it’s called the city of three rivers, that’s because three rivers (Danube, Inn and Ilz) meet together right at the town.

To start off our day we decided to check out something quite different and headed to a property up the hillside to tour a non-profit foundation’s interesting project. They work with people that have disabilities, like Down’s syndrome, providing them with purpose by growing, harvesting and distributing Aronia berries (this is the real name for chokeberries) juice and things.
We learned all about how they finance their work, how the people with disabilities are involved, how the production happens and even got to try some of the juice. It’s very flavourful, but a bit sour. The man who works there told us the juice is very good and is full of vitamins and some kind of “anti” things, and he even gave us some to take home.

Later on we went for a walk through the “old town” part of Passau where almost everything is 350 years old, from when the town was rebuilt after a big fire. We walked up the hillside to the huge St. Stephen’s Cathedral where they have the world’s biggest organ. We guess you need a big place for such a big organ.
After that we headed back down the hill to the riverside with our tour guide and he told us all sorts of interesting stories of the town and old days ways as we walked. One little fact was that the colours of all the buildings used to have a real meaning – before people could read and write the build colour told them what the business was: yellow was the food market, green was the pharmacy and pink was the pastry shop. Look we found all three in a row!
