Ah, the Bavarian countryside and Danube River, so peaceful!

We started our day heading out into the Bavarian countryside and stopped to visit a family owned cow farm. The farmer, Hans, showed us around and told us all about how he takes care of his cows and makes milk and cheese to sell to the markets. We even got to pet the baby cows and taste the yummy cheese.

It was amazing to hear about how he’s using new technologies to automate his farming. He had tags on the cows to keep track of their age and lineage, track milking, and monitor their health. There is a system set up that automates the milking process: the cows can go, on their own, to the milking machine corral when their ready to be milked, the machine uses sensors to hook them up, then it records how much milk they give, the temperature, etc. He even has a system to collect the cow waste and turn it into energy to assist with powering the farm.

When we left the farm we went for a lovely drive through the countryside, over the border into Austria, meeting up with our ship in the tiny village of Engelhartszell.

Then a lazy afternoon cruising the Danube River in the sunshine, watching the villages and pastures go by until we arrived at Grein just in time for dinner.
