Journeys back in time and river travelling

Our day started in Golubuc in Serbia. We went with our lovely “Princess” guide, Eva, to explore the Golubuc Fortress that was originally built in the 14th century by medieval Serbs. The fortress was so strongly built that it has been able to help its occupants defend attack about 120 times over its history, especially between the Ottoman Empire and Kingdom of Hungary.

We got to walk around inside and see the structure of some of its ten towers, as well as the courtyard and a few examples of what everyday fortress life might have been. We even saw some replica costumes from that era – so gorgeous.

Next we headed down the road to the where there is an archaeological site of an ancient town that was discovered in 1960. The site not only revealed hints of life from centuries ago but also covered all sorts of artifacts telling scientists about life in the town. The scientists tested the things they found using that to estimate that they are from around 7200-6000 BC – a very long time ago.

We then met up with our ship in Donji Milanovac to continue on down the river but immigration people needed to check out the boat and passenger passport records before we could continue. This seemed to take forever but we finally got permission to carry on, delaying our afternoon plans but it was a great time to sit up on the deck and relax for awhile.

As we sailed off down the Danube we came to a stunning site as the river narrowed into a gorge, that’s called the Iron Gates. Everyone gathered con the top deck to look at the huge, high rock face,of the gorge that is about 500 m and look for evidence of the caves and old Roman roads. We saw some of them as they went by, so exciting.

We even saw a huge face that was carved into the rock face that we heard was called Decebalus and near the end of the gorge there is a small monastery right on the river edge.
