We said Arrivederci to Roma this morning and headed off on the bus towards more southern regions of Italy.
Our first stop was Pompei, an ancient Roman city that became buried under 4-6 meters on volcanic ash in 79AD when Mount Vesuvius (that’s the mountain way in the background) erupted.
The city was completely lost for centuries until, in the later 1600s when people from the region were looking for water sources and started some digging. in the 1800s archaeological work started and by 1960 most of what was Pompei was uncovered showing us what this early Roman life would have been like.

Today it’s considered a UNESCO World Heritage site, we walked through the streets looking at what we’re shops, restaurants, wealthy persons homes (we were told we tell by the size and what was in them), baths (they were community places back then), and even an amphitheater (that’s the picture).
After a pizza lunch in Pompei, we headed off on the bus to Napoli (Naples), then got on a ferry and went to the Isle of Capri. The scenery was amazing, lots of rugged cliffs and homes built along the hillsides.
On the way to the hotel we road in a taxi that was like a convertible and passed by all sorts of interesting shops.

We can hardly wait for our walking tour of Capri!
