An evening with St. Mark & a light show

Last night we had the special privilege of visiting Basilica di San Marco after hours (when all the tourists and parishioners had gone home). It’s amazing, gold and sparkles everywhere.

There’s five domes on the ceiling, all covered in ground gold, with pictures and bible people on them ( you can see a bit up high behind the alter). This basilica is commonly known as St. Mark’s Basilica and his body is entombed there, under the alter. We heard a story that he was originally buried in Alexandria in Egypt and two Venetian merchants spirited it out of that country, by hiding it in a carriage of pork, to bring it back to the basilica where he wanted to buried.

It was a last night but it was sure a WOW experience to see.

Today we travelled on the Vicenza and visited the Teatro Olimpico. The is a theatre built by the famous architect, Andrea Palladio in the 1580s. The stage was set as a perspective views of the streets of ancient Thebes, with a set of seven long street views(you can see one in the picture). The set goes back 12 meters back, and was so intricately designed it was decided to leave it in place and all performances have used that set ever since (except it was temporarily dismantled and stored for safety during WWII).

We got to attend a private light show at the theatre designed to highlight the amazing stage sets, showing sunrises, sunsets, storms with all sorts of lighting techniques. So impressive!

Now it’s time for our disco dance party.
