Let’s give train travel a go

One last breakfast on board, one last walk nearby our ship, one last look at our ship and it’s time to say arrivederci to the SS La Venezia and lots of new friends.

Off on a water taxi for a quick look around Venezia as we head to the train station.

We found the train, and settled into our cabin. It’s so tiny, but we made it work tucking things away in every corner we could find.

Then we headed off to find the dining room car and get lunch. It’s lots of steps, down the narrow, wobbly halls. I guess we can sure have dessert with all the extra walking.

Our first stop is Trieste. It still in Italy, in the northeast on the Adriatic Sea. We went for a walk to the shore and the town square, or piazza as it’s called in Italian. We learned it was called Piazza Unitá d’Italia, when we were walking around we found out it was a very special day in town, the annual Barcolana sailing race. There were people everywhere to watch the over 1700 sailboats, browse the festival booths and enjoys the outdoor markets. It looked like lots of fun!

We only have one day in Trieste and we heard about a castle on the shore so we decided to check it out. It’s called the Miramare Castle. Wow, it’s big!

It was built in the mid 1800s for Archduke Ferdinand Maximillian and his wife Charlotte. The castle is still furnished with original furnishings from the time, including antiquities from all over the world. There is even the actual table that was used when Maximilian signed the document to become the Emperor of Mexico in 1864.

The castle sits atop the cliffs has a lovely 22 hectare garden with exotic plants, fountains and walking paths. We wanders a bit of the gardens and watched sailboats out at the sea before heading back to our train and moved on to our next stop.
