Today we went on a drive to Bruges in Belgium, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a great look at medieval time. It started around 900AD by the Vikings and became the capital of the County of Flanders.

We wandered the cobblestone roads, peeking down some narrow pathways and shops along the way. We saw a big medieval tower (it’s in the background), that we heard was called the Belfry of Burges. It was a great observation spot for watching for danger in its time and now people can climb up the 366 steps (we didn’t though) to see the view. Instead, we went to take a look at the lovely view of the buildings from the canals.
All the walking around made us thirsty, and after seeing the ‘wall of beer’ we had to stop and try a bit. There are 500 kinds of beer on the walls, all the way around the room, each with its own serving glass that has the beer’s name.
And, of course, you can’t be in Belgium without trying a bit of chocolate! Our friend showed us a special chocolate shop and we tasted some yummy treats.

It was such a nice afternoon that we decided to carry on our drive and take a walk on the promenade and pier at the seashore in Blankenberge, a town not far from Bruges that looks out to the North Sea. We heard that people have been coming to this beach with its soft beige sand since the 1700s and even though it was a very windy day it was a terrific place to walk and watch thee sea waves from the pier.
