Bonjour, Strasbourg!

Our ship parked on the west side of the Rhine River this morning, so we’re in France today. The historic city centre of Strasbourg is called the Grande Île and it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site.

We heard that over the years Strasbourg bounced back and forth between being a part of Germany and part of France, that is likely why we see lots of places that look quite like Germany. This view is some of the half-timber houses we saw when walking around the old town area. There are lots of narrow cobblestone streets with shops on the lower level and families living above.

We were amazed when we arrived at the Notre-Dame Cathedral near the town square. It’s huge, and the tower is 142 metres high, we wonder how the stone masons, who built this between 1180 and 1439, got the stones way up there. We were able to take a look inside (very quietly) and saw so many magnificent columns and stained glass windows. The thing that was most interesting was the astronomical clock, we watched as the little angel rang a bell to mark the time.

Tonight is the cocktail party with the ship captain and then a gala dinner. Such an honour, we got to shake hands and thanks our captain!

Now it’s one last night of party time (no pictures though).
