Seaside vistas and Thrones Old Town

We woke up to a beautiful Mediterranean morning in Dubrovnik, over looking the rocky shore of the Adriatic Sea while we had breakfast on the patio. What a life!

We learned that Dubrovnik is a seaport on the bottom tip of Croatia. It is also has an amazing ‘old town’ with a cool fortress up on the shoreline cliff. We had to take a look at what was there.

We went into the old town checking out all the places. We started with a peak into a Franciscan monastery that dates back to the 13th century and has the oldest known pharmacy, there is a museum that shows lots of the original bottles and medical tools. We also checked out the Rector’s Place. The Rector was the head government guy at the time and his palace was his residence and place to meet officials. In palace we saw lots of portraits of important people from that time and the Rector’s office private quarters. He sure lived like a king. We even saw a fancy Sedan Chair that the Rector used (it’s like a small carriage for the Rector to be carried by four men through town in comfort).

Then we checked out a bit of the fortress. It was built as a defensive position beginning in the late 12th century with additional sections added through to the 17th century. It still has about 1,940 metres of wall and is 25 metres high. It’s quite impressive and we’re pretty sure no one could get in there if they weren’t welcome.

We found out that it was the scene of Kings Landing from Game of Thrones, and we got to walk up the stairs that were from the ‘Shame walk’ scene.

After our tours we decided to wander through the markets and little shops – look what we found! We’re not sure what rubber duckies have to do with a medieval town or Game of Thrones but they sure are cute.
