Two Cities With Lakes on a Hot Day

We drove to Lucerne (or as the Swiss call it – Luzern) this morning and went for a walk around the old part of town. We walked across a winding, old wooden bridge called The Chapel Bridge (it’s called Kapellbrücke in German). We learned that it was built in 1333 and is the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe and the oldest surviving truss bridge in the world.

It is really warm today, so we decided to sit in the shade on the shore of Lake Luzern, enjoying the view, and a bit of a breeze, while watching some boats go by. There’s a nice promenade along the river bank with lots of leafy trees for shade and benches to sit on. What a great place to have an ice cream treat.

Well, back to driving as we head to our final destination of our travels … Zürich. The highway is very busy today and it took a long time to get there. At least we had the front seat and air conditioning.

After we arrived we decided to go for a short walk to see a few sights in the old part of Zürich. We came across a church called Grossmünster, but it’s getting restored and was mostly covered with scaffolding. It’s a very old church that we were told is a Romanesque style, that is noticed by the arched windows. Because we couldn’t really see the whole church they have a little model nearby, that it just our size.

As we headed back from our walk we followed a river and took a look at the lake (it’s called Lake Zürich). We saw some great views looking out towards the city with its mix of old and new buildings, and we even saw some Höckerschwans swimming by.
